APPLIED MATHEMATICS – I


SECTION A


UNIT I: Differential Calculus: - Successive differentiation, Taylor’s & Maclaurin’s series for one variable, indeterminate forms, curvature and Radius of curvature (excluding Newton,s Method) , Circle of curvature.

UNIT II: Partial Differentiation:-Partial derivatives, Eulers theorem, Total differentiation, Taylor’s and Maclaurins theorem, Maxima and Minima, Lagrange’s method, Jacobins

UNIT III: Solid Geometry: - Cartesian, spherical, cylindrical coordinate system and the4irt transformation, review of planes and introduction to straight lines, shortest distance between two lines, study of spheres, right circular cone and right circular cylinder.


SECTION B


UNIT IV: Differential Equations: First order first degree differential equations: Linear, reducible colinear and exact differential equations. Higher order differential equations with constant coefficient upto method of variation of parameters.

UNIT V: Differential Equations: Cauchy’s Legendre’s homogeneous differential equations, simultaneous differential equations, differential equations , differential equations of the type d2y / dx2 = f(x) and d2y / dx2 = f(y) Applications of differential equations to electrical circuits, kmechanics and vibrations(only upto second order)

UNIT VI: Complex Numbers: Cartesian and polar forms of complex numbers, (geometrical representation of fundamental operations on complex numbers). Demolver’s theorem hyperbolic functions and their inverse, logarithm of complex quantities. Separation or real & imaginary part.











APPLIED MATHEMATICS – II

SECTION A

UNIT I :Integral calculus: - ( Beta and Gamma functions, Diffentiation of definiteintegra) Tracing of cu5rves (Cartesian and polar Curfves) rectifications of simple curves, quadrature Volumes and surface of solids of revolutoms ( Cartesian, polar and parametric forms). Theorem of pappus and Guldin, mean value and root mean square malues.

UNIT II: Multiple integrals and their Applications:- Elementary double integrals, change of variable (simple transformation) change of order of integration (Cartesian and polar), application to mass area, volume and center of gravity (Cartesian and polar forms), elementary triple integrals.

UNIT III: Statistics:- Fitting of straight line, Y = a + bx +cx2 and the exponential curves by method of least squares, Lines of regression and correlation, rank correlation.

SECTION B


UNIT IV: Vector Calculus :- Introduction to vector Algebra, scalar point function, vector point function vector differentiation. Gradient. Divergence and Curve Directional derivatives with their physical interpretations solenoidal and Irrotational motions.

UNIT V: Vector Calculus:- Vector integration : Line, surface and volume intrgrals, stokes theorem, Gauss Divergence theorem, Greens Theorem (statement only) and their simple applications.

UNIT VI: Finite differences:- Difference table, operator E and central Factorials formula, Numerical differentiation and integration, difference equations with constant coefficients.

Applied Physics

Unit I : Quantum Mechanics-Wave – particle duality , de Broghe wavelength, Davisson-Germer experiment; Compton scattering; Hersenberg’s uncertainty principle, Thought experiment on single slit electron diffraction; Concept of a wave packet; Wave function and probability interpretation; Schrodinger,s equation; Infinite potential well; Qualitative nature of the wave function for finite potential well, Tunneling.

Unit II: Semiconductor Physics-Qualitative ideas on formation of electron energy bands in solids; Band-theory based classification of solids into insulators, semiconductors and conductors; Intrinsic semiconductors; Germanium and silicon. Typical energy-band diagram of an intrinsic semiconductor; Fermi energy; Doping and extrinsic semiconductors; Dependence of Fermi energy on temperature and doping concentration; Current conduction in semiconductors; p-n junction diode ; Diode rectifier equation; Transistor action, Hall effect.

Unit III: Wave Optics-Light as an electromagnetic wave; Wave characteristics of light; Interference; Review of double-slit interference; Interference in thin films; Anti-reflection coating; Polarization by scattering; Optic axis; Ordinary and extraordinary waves; Positive and negative crystals; Double refraction in a quartz prism; Polarizer and analyzer, Malus’ Law; Quarter and half wave plates.

Unit IV: Laser and Optical Fibers-Spatial and temporal coherence of a light wave; Principle of laser; Laser characteristics; Components of a laser; Optical fibers; structure and classification, optics of propagation in fiber; Acceptance angle and numerical aperture and detectors; Attenuation and distortion; Application; sensors.

Unit V: Crystal structure-Crystal structure; lattice, basis and unit cell; Cubic crystal structure; Tetrahedral and octahedral voids in fcc; Miller indices; Bragg’s law of X-ray diffraction.

Unit VI: Electron Ballistics-Lorentz force; Motion of changes in uniform electric and magnetic fields; Thomson’s Method of determination of e/m of an electron; Electron optics; Bethe’s law; Electric and magnetic focusing; Devices; CRT, CRO, Bainbridge mass spectrograph, Cyclotron.

APPLIED CHEMISTRY

UNIT I - Water Treatment-Hardness of water, types& determination of hardness, Brief discussion of chemistry involved in the processes of sedimentation , coagulation, Filtration and sterilization using UV, ozone,chlorine,break point chlorination; Softening of water-cold and hot lime soda process & its principle, problems based on lime soda process, zeolite process & its principle, problems based on zeolite process ,ion exchange process,-demineralization by synthetic ion exchange resins, Comparison between lime soda, zeolite and ion exchange process. Introduction to boiler troubles-carryover, priming and foaming. scale and sludge formation, external and internal treatment, Caustic embrittlement & boiler corrosion-causes; effect on boiler operation & methods of prevention; Internal conditioning-phosphate, carbonate & calgon. Desalination of saline water by reverse osmosis and electrolysis.

UNIT II – Cement-Manufacture of Portland cement- Raw materials ,chemical composition, cement modulii-ie; lime saturation factor, silica& alumina modulus; Dry and wet process of manufacture proportion & role of microscopic components; Setting and hardening of cement : Types of cement and its applications- Puzzolonic , White, High alumina, Rapid Hardening, Low heat cement. Types of additives –accelerators, retarders , air entrainment agents water repellents and their properties, Use of fly ash as a cementing material.

UNIT III-Corrosion of Metals & Alloys-Introduction to corrosion, , Electrochemical corrosion. Nernst theory, electrode potential, galvanic & conc. Cell ; galvanic and electrochemical series, Causes of corrosion ; Mechanism of direct chemical corrosion ; pilling bedworth rule;Differential aeration theory of corrosion; Types of corrosion, Galvanic, Concentration and pitting corrosion, Intergranular, stress, waterline, microbial corrosion Corrosion prevention –design and selection of material, Protective coatings-types and its applications.

Environmental Chemistry & Control of Environmental Pollution-Air Pollution : Natural and man made pollutants- CO, NOx, SOx, HC, SPM, Ozone depletion and effect on humans, acid rain. Acid rain ; catalytic converter, water pollution, classification and effect of pollution, preliminary ,primary, secondary tertiary treatment techniques, solid waste management.











UNIT IV-Fuels-Introduction, Calorific value, higher and lower calorific value; Determination of calorific value by Bomb calorimeter by Boy’s calorimeter; Ultimate analysis of coals; its significance Pulverization of coal, Combustion of coal, liquid fuel-petroleum mining and refining, fractional distillation, Use of gasoline and diesel in internal combustion engine.

ENGINEERING MECHANICS

SECTION –A
Unit I: Important vector quantities: Position vector, moment of force about a point, about an axis, couples, couple moment as a free vector.
Equivalent force systems: Resultant of a two dimensional distributed loads and three dimensional general force system, wrench.

Unit II: Equations of Equilibrium:
(i) Free body diagrams, Equations of Equilibrium, coplanar concurrent and Non-concurrent systems, General spatial force system, simple machines (Differential axle and wheel, single and double purchase crab). Velocity ratio, Mechanical Advantage, Efficiency etc.
(ii) Application of graphic statics to reactions of simple supported beams and trusses.

Unit III: Analysis of simple pin jointed frames by method of joints, method of sections and graphical methods.
Friction forces: Law of Coulomb friction, problems involving dry friction, simple applications like wedges and band brakes.

SECTION- B
Unit IV: Centriods and Moments of Inertia: Second moment and product of inertia of plane areas. Moment of inertia of masses. Transfer theorems of moment of inertia and product of inertia, Polar moment of inertia, principal axes, Mohr’s circle of inertia.
Introduction of Virtual Work Theorem: Principle of Virtual Work applied to equilibrium of Mechanisms, simple beams, pin jointed frames.

Unit V: Dynamics of a particle: Rectilinear Motion of a particle with constant and with variable acceleration. Rectangular components of curvilinear motion, Radial and tangential component of acceleration, kinetics of particle and several interconnected particle. Translation of bodies-force inertia method, D’Alemberts principle, Work Energy method, (Expression based on center of mass).
Method of Momentum: Linear impulse momentum, consideration for a system of partials, conservation of liner momentum, Elastic impact of two bodies, Direct central impact.
