According to Fire Brigade personnel, the fire was triggered by an electric short circuit in one of the air conditioners at the department.
The Computer Department is located in a sprawling complex adjacent to college building in front of Ajni Railway Station. The fire according to information began at 12.40 pm when smoke began billowing out of the department building. Before local fire fighting operations could begin the flames had engulfed entire computer section making it difficult even to step inside the section, said college officials. Big flames could be seen billowing out of college building during the afternoon. According to fire-brigade personnel, the short circuit occurred in one of the air conditioner at Computer Section and another reason for flames spreading fast was presence of flammable material. At around 1 pm, fire department received a call and three fire tenders were dispatched from Cotton Market and Narendra Nagar Fire Brigade Stations to the spot. The firemen took almost an hour to control the flames. And later the survey of department revealed that 50 computer machines and 6 air conditioners were completely gutted. Chief fire officer C S Jadhav also visited the spot and advised the college management to ensure that fire extinguishers are in working condition and directed them to increase their numbers. The college authorities said they used their extinguishers but could not control the flames.
