No aid will be issued unless earlier grants audited for economically backward class (EBC), DTE tells to colleges

The government has adopted a tough stance against those unaided professional colleges which have failed to submit audited statements of the state grants received towards 50 per cent reimbursement of tuition fees for economically backward class (EBC) students.

Such colleges will not receive the EBC grants for academic years 2009-10 and 2010-11, unless they furnish the audited statements for the previous grants, joint director of technical education D N Shingade has said in a letter sent to principals of all colleges falling under the Pune region. Apart from Pune district, the region covers colleges in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Solapur districts.

It may be noted that reimbursement of tuition fees for students from socially and economically backward classes, to enable them pursue higher and professional studies, remains one of the flagship initiatives of the state government.

For EBC students, the government has committed reimbursement of 50 per cent of their tuition fees every year. Once the grant is extended to the institution concerned, the latter is expected to furnish an audited statement of distribution of such grant.

Shingade has stated in his letter, "A substantial number of colleges, which are into offering pharmacy, hotel management and catering technology (HMCT), architecture degree and diploma courses and post-graduate management studies, have not submitted their audited statements for the period between academic year 2006-07 and 2009-10."

Shingade stated, "The colleges have failed to meet this key requirement, despite repeated reminders and letters to them in the past." The DTE has now planned specific sessions for such colleges to get their financial statements for the EBC grants audited at the office of the joint DTE at Bahirat Patil chowk in Shivajinagar, Pune.

Pharmacy, architecture and HMCT degree and diploma institutions, which have to get their statements audited, are required to report to the joint DTE office between April 18 and 20. Similarly, PG management institutions (MBA/MCA) have to report on April 21, and between April 25 and 27, the letter stated.

The representatives of such colleges have been told to ensure that they bring along with them the Shikshan Shulka Samiti`s (fee regulatory authority) letters of approval of fees and merit list for the academic year concerned and the list of students for whom the EBC grant was cleared.
