SCIENCE in school and superstition at home can not go hand in hand. Apart from the society, education system prevailing in India is also defective. “Despite crores of rupees being spent in name of science education in the country and on procurement of machines for teaching the students, the education system has failed to develop a scientific temperament -- an inquisitive mind that asks questions ‘why so,” said President of Association for Research and Training in Basic Science Education and noted socialist thinker Raghu Thakur.
Thakur was speaking during the inaugural ceremony of the week-long science exhibition ‘Apurva Vigyan Mela’ jointly organised by the Association and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) at Rashtrabhasha Bhavan, North Ambazari Road. It was inaugurated by NMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Vishnupad Bute. Bute in his address said, “There is no dearth of talent, but due to socio-economic backwardness, they do not get the opportunity to present their talent,” he said. Instrumentation Division Incharge of AGMARK Dipti Banerjee, ICAR Allahabad’s retired scientist Dr O P Gupta, Senior Chemist in AGMARK N S Sharma, Assistant Commissioners D D Patil, Vijay Humne, Education Officer (Secondary) Ashok Talatule, social activist Vikas Deshpande were prominently present on the occasion. Over 600 students from 20 NMC schools are participating. They were provided training by NMC teachers before the expo. It is designed to explain the basic principles of science. The expo will remain open from 11 am to 4.30 pm and will conclude on December 6. 40,000 students from different schools are expected to visit the expo. Also present on the occasion were Rajendra L Pusekar, Chandrakant Thakre, Vijay Vairagade and others. Jammu Anand conducted the proceedings while D D Patil proposed a vote of thanks. ‘No dearth of talent in NMC schools’ MOHAMMED Sharfuddin is a standard IX student of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Urdu High, Aasinagar, run by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). He has never spoken in the public. But on Wednesday, he addressed a gathering of over 5,000 people. And what did he speak about: Complex theories of science. Sharfuddin is not the exception who participated in the week-long science exhibition Apurva Vigyan Mela. There are over 600 students of as many as 20 NMC schools who are displaying their exhibits in the expo under way at Rashtrabhasha Bhavan, North Ambazari Road. NMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Vishnupad Bute said, “These children belong to socio-economically backward classes. But do not get opportunity to present their talent. Such events will reduce the misconceptions regarding quality of education at NMC schools,” he said. This exhibition has 150 exhibits prepared by students of Standard VII to IX. 40,000 students from different schools are expected to visit the expo.
