The city bus stop shelters being erected by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has raised a question mark whether it is for the convenience of public or increasing traffic congestion? NMC is running 230 Starbus including 150 standard-size Starbus, and 80 Mini Starbus in all parts of the city.
Three hundred more buses are all set to be introduced on city roads. For the convenience of passengers, and proper stopping of buses, NMC has planned 400 city bus stop shelters on all routes in the city. The Civic Body finalised locations of 200 city bus stop shelters, and gave the contract on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis to M/s Greenthumb Innovators Private Limited, Pune, on May 18. The company has to complete the work within one year as per agreement. The company made a prototype of bus shelter in RBI square before couple of months, but NMC administration rejected that. After this, NMC gave three models of bus stops. Now, the contractor has started erecting the bus shelters. The contractor has erected around 12 bus shelters till Saturday on Wardha road, North Ambazari road, and other roads. Out of 12, one is erected in Rahate Colony square on Wardha road heading towards Lokmat square. While constructing the Wardha road, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) constructed a Bus Bay between Rahate Colony square, and Lokmat Square considering the availability of space. There is a proper way to enter in the Bus Bay after crossing Rahate Colony square, and a way to come again on Wardha road. This is said to be only one Bus Bay available in the city. The bus shelter that was to be erected in middle of Bus Bay was erected near Rahate Colony square on Wardha road, just Bus Bay entrance. This not only depicts the improper planning of NMC but will also trigger traffic congestion on busy Wardha road between Rahate Colony square, and Lokmat Square. If the Starbus stops at this bus shelter the vehicles coming from Rahate Colony square to Lokmat square will be definitely affected. Besides, the vehicles going to Flyover will also face problem. Apart from this, the well-constructed Bus Bay is currently encroached by vendors. A bin is also placed on the Bus Bay. The bus shelter should have been erected in middle of Bus Bay. This will have created facility for passengers and buses as the Bus Bay is around 50 meter in length, and away from Wardha road. Besides, this would also permanently clear the encroachment. The problem is not only with the bus shelter erected in Rahate Colony square but also other bus shelters erected till date, especially on Wardha road, and North Ambazari Road. All are erected on footpath or adjacent to road or in front of any offices or hospitals. Today when NMC is going hi-tech with good quality buses, should also think about bus shelters in such a way.
