VNIT fails to remember its alumnus Hemant Karkare

A lot of tears rolled down the cheeks and many candles melted on Thursday in remembrance of the braveheart, Hemant Karkare but the 26/11 anniversary passed as any other routine day at his alma mater, VNIT, bereft of any formal function to pay homage to the alumnus.

Hemant Karkare did his BE (Mech) from VRCE (now VNIT) in 1975. VNIT Director Dr S S Gokhale has a reason to explain why not any “formal” function was organised to pay tributes to Karkare. “The college is busy with the examination and hence no formal function,” the Director contended. If you are not fully convinced, he has one more argument which will simply leave you clueless. “Remembrance is always in your heart and function is only a symbolic,” he explained but hastened to add, “Karkare was one of the greatest alumni.” Karkare was born in the city on December 12, 1954 and studied in New English School, Congress Nagar and passed SSC with 84 per cent in 1969. Later, he completed his HSSC from Institute of Science in 1971. After BE, Karkare, who rose to the rank of Chief of Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad, had done PG from National Productivity Council in 1977. He had stints with National Productivity Council as Assistant Director and also with Hindustan Lever as the Product Manager before he was inducted into the IPS cadre in 1982.
