MCI approves extra 101 PG seats in Govt Medical Colleges

There is a reason for the medical aspirants to rejoice as in academic year 2010, around 101 post-graduate (PG) seats have been increased in government-run medical colleges in the State. For Government Medical College, Nagpur, recommendation for increasing 21 post-graduate seats has been made to Government of India by Medical Council of India (MCI). Similarly, present post-graduate student-teacher ratio of 1:1 in the general speciality in case of a Professor, is modified to 1:2, and in case of super speciality, for both Professor and Associate Professor, it will be also modified to 1:2. The gains in terms of increase in the post-graduate intake capacity as a result of the same, have started materialising. Recently, a study group, headed by Dr Vedprakash Mishra, Member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Academic Cell, MCI, had submitted its report mentioning its recommendations for the same. The report was later approved by the MCI.

In case of government-run and managed colleges, the said augmentation of the intake capacity would be rendered without any procedural formalities, so as to be implemented from the academic session 2010-2011 itself. As a result, government-run colleges all over the country are not expected to be making any formal application including payment of inspection fee, causation of inspection and recommendations thereon. All government medical colleges in the country have been asked to furnish the position of Professors in various subjects and existing intake of the concerned postgraduate course in the subject in a standard proforma. Based on the said information, the Council has recommended increase in post-graduate seats in the concerned courses in commensuration with the modified ratio of postgraduate teachers is to registered postgraduate student. With this, three postgraduate seats will be increased in Vasantrao Naik Medical College, Yavatmal, 10 seats in Government Medical College, Aurangabad; 31 seats in B J Medical College, Pune; 7 seats in Government Medical College, Nanded; 13 seats in Grand Medical College, Mumbai; 8 seats in SRTR Ambejogai while 10 seats will be increased in Vaishampayan Memorial Medical College, Solapur for 2010-11 session. Thus 101 prestigious postgraduate seats stand augmented, which would be available for the admissions to the students in the academic year 2010-11. This is bound to go a long way in not only rendering the legitimate opportunity to the aspiring medical graduates to be admitted against the meritorious seats in Government run medical colleges but would also add to the desired generation of the specialised trained health manpower in coming times. When contacted, Dr Mishra stated that by virtue of this initiative as of now in the current year 795 seats in 45 government-run medical colleges in 12 states of the country, postgraduate seats including super speciality have been increased and many more are in the pipeline. Dr Mishra expressed satisfaction towards this initiative by MCI which has now started bearing fruits, and opined categorically that it is indeed a boon to the meritorious students of the country in general and Maharashtra in particular. He thanked Dr Ketan Desai, President of Medical Council of India, for ensuring operationalisation of this initiative in larger academic and societal interests.
