Sri Lanka-based Sabaragamuwa University is establishing an International Buddhist Learning Centre at Kamptee Road. It will be a developed on the lines of much acclaimed University of Hong Kong Centre of Buddhist Studies or Prajnopaya Institute of Buddhist Studies of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, in association with Buddhist Training Institute. Talking exclusively to The Hitavada on the eve of silver jubilee foundation ceremony of the Buddhist Training Institute, Kamptee Road, Bhante Dr Pannila Ananda Nayaka Thero, founding President of Houston Buddhist Vihara, Sri Lanka, and faculty at Sabaragamuwa University, informed that it will be a seminary and graduate school that will be affiliated to the Sri Lanka-based university. In the initial years, it will be an affiliated school and within a decade, it will be converted into an independent university,†Dr Ananda informed. The Sangha Chief, or Nayaka Thero, of Attanagalla Rajamaha Vihara one of the most famous ancient royal temples in Western Province, Sri Lanka, Dr Ananda said, The University will provide world-class faculties while the infrastructure will be that of the Institute. It will offer courses in Buddhism and Pali language. The project is supported by the Government of Sri Lanka.†The construction of the building and other facilities are under way in full swing at the Institute premises and its functioning will be starting from February 2010. It will accommodate as many as 115 students. A team of 6 highly qualified Lecturers from the Sri Lanka-based University will guide the students. The administration will be looked after by the University. It will offer a broad range of Buddhist studies at postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD), Master and undergraduate levels. The degrees will be awarded through the Faculty of Social Sciences,said Dr Ananda, the founder Director of Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara in Los Angeles, US. The new institute will aim, through profound research and teaching of Buddhism, at building up Buddhist personality with wisdom and compassion, at developing capabilities and knowledge required for seeing life and the world, and at producing talents who can subjectively and positively make contributions to the development of mankind over the world at large such as religion, education, politics, culture, etc. The primary objectives is to teach and conduct research in Buddhist Studies at a level consistent with international standards, he added.
