Governor Jamir for bifurcating Nagpur University , Mumbai University , Pune University.


In present scenario, it seems that the Maharashtra Government is very keen to improve quality of education in State. Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of Universities in the State S C Jamir and Chief Minister Ashok Chavan jointly reviewed the State Government’s plans for improvement of higher, technical and vocational education at Raj Bhavan, which shows the concerned of State Government for the imrpovement in the quality of education. A Roadmap incorporating all-over development of Higher, Technical and Medical Education is to be finalised within two months by J S Saharia, Principal Secretary, Higher and Technical Education. Governor has also invited debate on bifurcating Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur University as number of colleges affiliated to them have been increased.

Saharia made a presentation on the direction of the proposed reforms and the roadmap on medium- to long-term initiatives to be taken in the Higher and Technical Education. Maharashtra Minister for Higher Education Rajesh Tope, Minister of State Varsha Gaikwad, Chairman of the Shikshan Shulk Samiti Justice P.S. Patankar (retd) and other high-ranking officials were present during the presentation. Recently, Government has changed the selection process for the appointment of Vice-Chancellors of the universities in Maharashtra. Till now there was no qualification criterion mentioned in Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994. But now those criterion were included. It is the major change made by the government. The Government has also fixed the eligibility criterion for members of various bodies and authorities of the universities. After pointing out the changes made in universities act, Governor expressed confidence that Maharashtra will be a role model for reforms in university education. The Governor called for a debate on bifurcating large universities like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur which have become unmanageable on account of having large number of colleges affiliated to them. Jamir also called for filling up of the vacant teaching posts in universities in Maharashtra urgently with qualified teachers in order to ensure highest standards of education.Expressing the new government’s resolve to accord high priority to improving quality, access and governance in the higher, technical and vocational education in the State, the Chief Minister said his Government is determined to make education globally competitive. He said the government will implement the various recommendations made by the Prof. Yashpal Committee, Planning Commission, National Knowledge Commission and also the directions received from the High Court and the Governor. Chief Minister said, Government is serious about making higher education affordable for students in rural areas. Chavan also mooted the idea of creating a mechanism for accreditation of schools on the lines of accreditation of colleges. He expressed the strong need for prescribing refresher courses for teachers. J S Saharia will finalise the Roadmap for Higher Education in the next two months and to implement the various recommendations regarding higher, technical and vocational education in a phased manner. Rajesh Tope expressed his resolve to quickly finalize the roadmap for improving the quality, access and governance in higher and technical education and to implement the same with vigor. While talking to The Hitavada, J S Saharia said, “We are keen to bring quality improvement in Higher and Technical Education. For this, all measures would be taken. Stress will be given on filling up of vacancies and amendment that are more relevant.”
