No power cuts from this week in nagpur?

Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) is likely to issue an interim order for zero load-shedding (ZLS) in Nagpur, Amravati, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Aurangabad early next week, sources told TOI.

MERC will hold public hearings on the petition filed by MSEDCL for ZLS in these cities in Pune on Thursday and Navi Mumbai on Friday. The Commission has directed MSEDCL to submit revised calculations for the ZLS petition as load-shedding in urban areas had gone up by one hour and the tariff had also increased since the petition was filed in July. Sources said that MSEDCL would submit the revised calculations, which are ready, to MERC on Monday. The commission would go through the calculations on Tuesday and then issue an interim order either the same day or next.

MSEDCL would be then asked to submit a report to the Commission regarding cost incurred on purchase of power to make the designated cities load-shedding free and the revenue collected through levy of additional supply charge (ASC) on consumers of these cities.

While MSEDCL contends that the ASC for Nagpur will be around 56 paise per unit against 40 paise per unit proposed earlier due to increase in duration of load-shedding, Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) has contended that the ASC would be lower as revenue collection of MSEDCL from the city due to increase in tariff will be substantially higher.

Nagpurians have been awaiting relief from power cuts since former minister of state for energy Sunil Deshmukh made an annoucement in state assembly on December 26, 2008, about making Nagpur and Amravati load-shedding free. VIA had accordingly filed a petition. Due to apathetic attitude of MSEDCL and rigid stance adopted by MERC, the move failed.
