Power supply to west Maharashtra hit

Power supply to western Maharashtra and Marathwada has been badly affected as Mahatransco has shut down the 400 KV Chandrapur-Parli double circuit line due to the cave-in of the overburden dump at WCL's Pimpalgaon mine. The transmission company was not in a position to state as to when the line would be restarted.

MSEDCL officials said that the breakdown had created an additional deficit of around 1,000 MW in western Maharashtra and Marathwada and the distribution company was left with no alternative but to start emergency load-shedding in these regions. However, Mumbai proper would be spared from power cuts. Vidarbha will be an unintended beneficiary of this accident, as power that cannot be evacuated to western part of the state would be supplied to the region.

Mahatransco chief engineer Mohammed Ahfaz, who has rushed to Chandrapur to monitor the repair work, said that staff from Nagpur had been rushed to the site and they were exploring options for restoring normalcy.

Ahfaz said that one of the towers of the double circuit line had been hit hard by the landslide and tilted precariously. Hence, the company decide to shut down the transmission line.

"We have never encountered such a problem before. However, we will have to take a quick decision. Either we will shift the affected tower to a safe location nearby or strengthen its base at the same spot if it is possible," the CE said.
